Sophia Young of the San Antonio Silver Stars has been working with intern coach James Wade. Wade has been assigned the task of helping Young work on her individual skills. Young has improved tremendously, as is evidence by her recent WNBA Player of the Week award.
SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Silver Stars forward Sophia Young has been named the Western Conference Player of the Week presented by Boost Mobile, for games played from June 25 to July 1, the WNBA announced today.
Young helped lead the Silver Stars to a 2-0 record on the week as the team improved its overall record to 7-5, third best in the Western Conference, with wins over the two teams ranked first and second in the standings – Minnesota and Los Angeles. For the week, Young averaged 22.5 points per game on 62.0 percent shooting (18-for-29) with 7.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
Young opened the week by scoring a team-high 23 points in a 94-80 win against visiting Los Angeles. The win, the third in as many games for the Silver Stars this season, was Young’s third-consecutive 20-point game against the Sparks. In the three meetings with Los Angeles this season, Young has tallied 67 points. She then notched her third double-double of the season with 22 points and a team-best 10 rebounds in a 93-84 win against Minnesota, who entered the game with a league-best 13-1 record.
A three-time WNBA All-Star, Young leads San Antonio with 17.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.17 steals per game on the season, shooting 49.7 percent from the field. It marks the second career WNBA Player of the Week honor for Young, who also earned POW recognition for the week of May 27, 2008.
